Shuyin is traveling across the world by the sea, when his ship crashes and he falls overboard. He later washes up on sure at a beach that he has no knowledge of whatsofever. As he’s laying there, a girl comes walking along the beach and sees him there. She walks over to him, kneels down, and smiles at him. Shuyin is immeditately memorized by her. The girl, who’s name he found out was Lenne, took him back to her village to take care of him and Shuyin realizes he’s in love with her. He tires to get to know her more, but for some reason Lenne is very distant. He knows that she doesn’t hate him or dislike him, but she just wont open up to him and he has no clue why.
Then one day, he sees Lenne performing a summoning, and he realizes that Lenne is a summoner. He stares at her in awe as he watches her sad and tired eyes fall to the ground. Shuyin now knows why Lenne is so distant because, as her duty of a summoner, she is to sacrifice herself to stop all evil and it was best to be distant from the world to make your departure much less painful and emotional. However, this doesn’t stop Shuyin from trying to get close to Lenne.
The next day, he follows her on a hill and they begin talking. As he starts to get her to laugh and smile, a sudden gasp from a random civilian *cough*Rikku*cough* jolts Lenne out of her happy state and she turns her head to see whats the matter. Not too far away from them is a raging wave, coming start towards them. Shuyin looks too and Lenne’s eyes widen in horror as the wave crashes upon them and the villiage.
Later that day, once everything is settled, Lenne and Shuyin stand next to each other again on a hill, gazing at the now destoryed villiage. Everything begins to sink in for Shuyin and he realizes how important Lenne’s role in this world really is. He turns his head to look at her, but she only lifts her eyes to the underwater city, preparing herself for another sending for the innocent people that died that day.
The next day, Shuyin finds out Lenne is leaving for her pilgrimage. He begs her to let him come with her, but she shakes her head no, telling him she has to do so alone and then walks away, leaving a heartbroken Shuyin behind.
Days past after Lenne’s leaving and Shuyin keeps seeing the beautiful girl everywhere. He looks up at the sky and sees her face, he sees her sleeping form in HIS sleep, and he imagines what she’s doing at every moment. As the days go by, he stands up on that hill that he and Lenne use to go sometimes and pictures her perfect face and the conversations that they had. He wishes to be able to watch her again and guide her on her journey so she wouldn’t be alone on her darkest days (especially when she’s performing a sending).
While on Lenne’s journey, more evil is afoot and Shuyin grows very angry that all this is the cause of him not being able to be with Lenne. He just hopes and wishes that there is someone out there who could bring her back to him. Later at night, Shuyin visits the place where he first figured out Lenne was a summoner and he imagines her there with him. Again, he sees her in the night sky and lying in the damp grass, but he knows she really isn’t there so he wonders around. He begins walking through a field of some sort when he suddenly spots a girl with long, light-brown hair. She turns her head around and Shuyin sees that it really is Lenne. She spots him too and her eyes widen at seeing him. His eyes do too, but as he tries to go over to her, she takes off running. He runs after her, wanting and needing to talk to her. When she disappears behind a corner, he follows her again but then cuts her off and runs in front of her, catches her in his arms as she runs into him, unable to stop on time. They look each other in the eyes and Lenne then turns her gaze down to the ground. Tears start to form in her eyes as she begins to mentally beat herself up for having Shuyin find her again. She knew she loved him, but just seeing him was making her job as a summoner harder than ever. Just seeing him made her want to her a normal life - a normal life with him. As they stand there in deep silence, Shuyin looks down at Lenne’s sad face and begins to feel remorse and longing for her. He realizes that his presence wasn’t making anything any easier for Lenne and he didn’t want to bring her any pain, just love. So, deciding that it was best for him to leave for good, he’s about to open his mouth to tell her when Lenne suddenly looks back up at him and smiles. Relieved that Lenne wants him to stay with her, Shuyin begins to lean down towards Lenne and he kisses her.
Sadly though, all good things have to come to an end, and so has Lenne’s time comes. Shuyin, vowing to be by her side until the end, watches her as she dances the dance that will take her away from him. As her dance slowly becomes to an end and she takes a final spin, her body turns to pyreflies and begins to fly up in the air. Shuyin watches this and pictures Lenne’s smiling face. To show how much Lenne loves him, she covers Shuyin’s body with her pyreflies like an embrace and then disappears forever. Shuyin, very much missing her, wishes and imagines that he could turn back time and be with Lenne again, to go wherever she went. He remembers her touch and how she felt in his arms and a sharp pain forms in Shuyin’s chest. He visits the place of where he first witnessed Lenne summoning when a sudden bright light appears behind him. He turns around to see a girl fly down towards him with her arm streetched out. He grabs onto her grasp and suddenly appears in the Farplane which all the dead souls go. Confused and distraught, he turns around and smiles when he sees his lover Lenne, who smiles back. He reaches out to her and she moves towards him, running into his arms. They hold each other close as they spend the rest of their lives together, forever in the farplane.
